Where do you hide when you want to hide from yourself? Pink Pretender is a series of self-portraits created over the last few years which, underneath layers full of colors, patterns and various disguises, deals with themes of self-acceptance; intuitive search for self-love and a slow growth of self-awareness.
The theme of hiding the face (behind custom-made masks, sunglasses, hats, or heavy makeup) is present in most photographs, indicating a deep-rooted, almost desperate need to escape oneself. Dressing up as someone else, being in the constant search for a new disguise, costume, character. Reaching out as far as possible. As if being just herself wasn't enough.
In the series, Anouk treats her body as an object, a pretext for presenting yet another character, another element of the stage set, a mere prop behind which one can hide one's face, one's self, one's personality.
Accidentally the series also became a kind of diary for the artist; a reflection of the reality she managed to create for herself. An unplanned record of her travels and of the places she lived, worked, rested. Random postcards from her life. Polished, posed, time-stopped fragments of her dreams and ambitions. Like colorful butterflies, pinned in a display case.
